New Watches of 2016

Progress, like clock hands, may be relentlessly surging forward, but the creators behind the time-honoured craft of watchmaking have been holding back on the slick innovations, turning instead to the watch’s roots and its functional nature. These classic models dial it down to the basics: the artistry of the classic wristwatch, the elegance of simplicity, and the harmonious rhythm of a flawlessly executed mechanism.

Toric Kaleidoscope Prestige

Inspired by a pocket watch dating back to the late 18th century belonging to the Sandoz collection and restored by the Parmigiani Fleurier restoration workshop, this unique piece showcases a rotating disk with mother-of-pearl inlay under a delicate rose-gold rosette. A hand-engraved gold “guilloche” dial with a kaleidoscope effect adds visual interest, while a “cathedral chime” minute-repeater movement with two gongs treats the ears, playing four melodies. Power reserve 40 hours. Water resistance 10m.

Altiplano 38mm 900D

Piaget Altiplano watches are known for their masterfully crafted, ultra-thin mechanisms. In this year’s freshly launched 900D, the 18k white-gold case has been whittled down to an unprecedented 5.6mm, to earn the title of world’s thinnest jewellery watch. In an ingenious design, Piaget’s iconic hand-wound calibre movement merges to become one with the exterior. Inlaid baguette diamonds stud the case, encircled by a scatter of brilliant-cut diamonds on the dial, for an organic feel that brings out the play of light. Power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

Patek Philippe

Complications Collection Ref. 5930G-001

Patek Philippe introduced its first “world time” model in 1940. After more than 70 years, the new World Time Chronograph carries on the legacy. With a reinvented movement, a blue element displays 24 city names, representing 24 time zones. The 24-hour ring doubles as a day/night indicator, with brightness-adjustable backgrounds for day and night. A small gap between the city disk and the 24-hour ring accommodates the seconds scale with fourth-of-a-second graduations. 30-minute counter at 6 o’clock. Power reserve 50–55 hours. Water resistance 30m.
