Tucked amidst the Auvergne volcanoes in the heart of France, the small town of Vichy holds one of the world’s best-kept beauty secrets. Flowing through ancient volcanic rock, the town’s thermal springs are infused with rare minerals. The springs were popular with the ancient Romans and their therapeutic qualities also later drew members of nobility.
Locals and visitors to the town of Vichy had long reported improvements to their skin through immersion in the springs, but about 80 years ago, Vichy Laboratories began extensive tests to verify the antioxidant and protective properties beneficial to skin. Thus the dermocosmetic company Vichy was born, and its research on all skin-types and uses of the local water has continued to today.
Our beauty editor, Many Ngom, met with Vichy scientists and product specialists in Alberta’s Banff region as they launched their newest offering, Aqualia Thermal. The turquoise waters of Lake Louise set the background, recalling Vichy’s alpine beauty.
We learned about Vichy’s symbiosis of skincare and health, and heard from Vichy experts about the thought behind the company’s products.

Preventing the damaging effects of UV rays is an important part of skincare. Vichy emphasizes this aspect of skincare with a variety of products to provide protection from the sun. Vichy experts warned against misconceptions about sun protection. For example, staying in the shade doesn’t provide absolute protection as UV rays can bounce off concrete, sand, and other surfaces.
