Audrey’s Style

“For beautiful eyes,Look for the good in others; For beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; And for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” —Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn’s elegance and sophisticated style are still emulated today by fashion designers and celebrities, as they were at the height of her brilliant career.

She remains the iconic poster-child for the ‘gamine’ look, with her pixie cut, turtleneck, ballerina flats and Capri pants. Her signature style was very much her own, not created by a fashion stylist nor spun by a team of image-makers.

Authenticity was important to Hepburn as an actress and activist, and she embodied ‘effortless chic’ in its truest spirit.

The ‘Audrey Look’ — a catch phrase for her low-maintenance routine — means minimalist makeup, pale lipstick, and emphasis on eyes.

On film sets, makeup artist Alberto Rossi applied foundation, then powder and a sprinkling of Evian water which, once dry, achieves a luminous look. Mascara, eyeliner, brow pencil and dark shadow in the crease and she was ready for her close up.

Off-set, Audrey had three simple steps:

Apply eyeliner on eyelids’ edge; keep eyebrows thick; and use pink or pale lipstick.

Face: Apply Clarins’ True Radiance foundation, then quick strokes of Éclat Minute Pen to brighten shadowy areas, especially under eyes. Joue Contraste Innocence blush by Chanel on cheeks, finished with a dusting of Guerlain’s powder foundation, Lingerie de Peau.

Eyes: Sweep medium beige eyeshadow from lash to brow and dust a grey tone like Bobbi Brown’s Smokey Nude in the crease. Line top lid with Ecriture de Chanel Noir eyeliner, slightly thicker towards outer edge. Lancôme Grandiose mascara creates extra-long starlet lashes. Guerlain KissKiss Crayon Sourcils in universal brownish-grey will give you her bold eyebrow style.

Lips: Apply Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Viva lipstick and blot with a tissue. Or for a youthful look, try Chanel’s Lèvres Scintillantes lip-gloss.
