the best watches to match your sportscar

Lauren Williams

There is an intangible bond between sports cars and wristwatches. Cars strive to outrun time as watches record it, each flaunting speed and accuracy to articulate beautiful craftsmanship.

In 1810, Caroline Murat, queen of Naples, asked Breguet Watches to create a timepiece she could wear like a bracelet. Two and a half years later, the first wristwatch was placed on her wrist. Seventy-three years after that, German engineer Karl Benz made the first sports car, and over the next century, both industries raced toward ever-greater ingenuity. The collaboration of these trades was inevitable in a world where “crossing boundaries” is the norm. How did shouts from the racing tracks intertwine with the delicate ticks of intricate timepieces? As early cars became fast, racing grew into a popular sport. Old-fashioned pocket watches could no longer time the racers’ extravagant speeds, and carefully-calibrated wristwatches took their place.

These masterpieces still represent the highest standards of modern manufacturing. An exquisite chronometer and a top-performing sports car are about the same price. The machines often share features now: tachometers are common in watches, as are carbon fibre, rubber and titanium cases, straps or bezels.

It is said that people’s wristwatches are another business card. The people who own a racing watch are undoubtedly adventurous, fearless, enthusiastic, and vigorous. They’ll enjoy the masterpieces below.
