Urban chic fashion brand Michael Kors recently hired a new spokesperson — famous Chinese actress Yang Mi — to speak to its growing international audience. The charming, witty actress from Beijing is best known for a wide range of popular roles, including Lin Xiao, who is fragile in appearance but strong on the inside in the film series Tiny Times; the clever girl, Luo Qingchuan, who went back to the Qing Dynasty from modern times in Jade Palace Lock Heart; and the affectionate but stubborn girl, Bai Qian, in the TV series Eternal Love.
In recent years, the spotlight on Yang has been particularly intense, with her high-profile marriage to Hong Kong actor Hawick Lau and the birth of their daughter, nicknamed Little Sticky Rice. She’s even found the time to set up her own personal studio and start producing. Despite having had a child, Yang stays in amazing shape and maintains her beautiful appearance, which opened many sponsorship opportunities with famous cosmetics brands, such as Estée Lauder and Lancôme.
In 2016, Yang was invited to watch a Michael Kors show. As it turned out, Yang became the star of the show as photos of the blackish-green Michael Kors Mercer handbag she was carrying went viral in China. Shortly afterwards, all the Michael Kors stores across China sold out of the bag.
From then on, Yang is often caught toting different colours and sizes of Mercer bags at work and while travelling. Due to the actress’ predilection for this handbag series, Michael Kors designed a bespoke one-of-a-kind Mercer just for her — one side of the square bag has a small New York license plate with her initials “YM” on it, and the opposite side is smacked with a big red kiss — a perfect reflection of Yang’s sassy personality.
As the global spokesperson for Michael Kors, Yang has flown to London and New York City for fashion shoots. “Although the breakfast and weather was a bit cool, our work atmosphere was good, so the photography work proceeded very smoothly,” she says. “It seemed to be finished in just a blink.”
The bond with Michael Kors has been an effortless one for the Chinese star. “As a casual luxury brand, Michael Kors integrates the elements of luxury, youth, and sports, making it a mix more for daily life,” she says. “It makes people feel fashionable at any time, but it’s also comfortable and special.” With this partnership, Yang hopes to pass a more practical and fashionable spirit to urban women who work at the office or at home, inspiring beauty and confidence wherever they happen to be.
As a veteran actress and star who has been active in the highly competitive entertainment industry for more than 20 years, Yang has gone through a lot of wind, rain and hardship, and has found her own unique way of keeping beautiful.
“Only by having a good attitude can one have a good look,” she says. “We have to see more and learn more. There are all kinds of ways to represent beauty in this world. They are all waiting for you to discover. As for bad experiences, in fact, no matter what emotions you had at that time, happiness, anger, or sadness are just experiences, which are all worthy of cherishing. When you have the attitude of learning and enriching yourself, maybe you’ll even find them interesting.”
As for having a sense of fashion, Yang says, “I think it’s a kind of attitude, a lifestyle. You don’t have to pursue it, and don’t define it on dress and makeup. Fashion should be something like inner energy, which allows people to embrace fresh things with a more positive attitude. You can also represent yourself through it and let people know who you are.”
